My brother and sister-in-law were supposed to move to Texas at the end of the month, so I decided I wanted to do fun outings with the nieces and nephews before they left, a weekend for the girls and a weekend for the boys. I've had Sophie and Aidan overnight before, but never Carson or Livi, so I was excited for our special time together. Last weekend, Sophie and Livi spent the night, and my 2 year old daughter thought it was the coolest thing ever. She was one of the big girls, taking bubble baths in the Jacuzzi tub, drinking root beer floats and eating pizza, and watching Christmas movies and eating popcorn. The next morning, I surprised Livi and Sophie with Breakfast with Santa at the Botanical Conservatory. They got to eat breakfast, meet Santa and make crafts. And since I never took Livi's 6-year-old photos, we decided this was the perfect opportunity to get some great shots of her and Sophie with all of the beautiful Christmas decorations at the Botanical Conservatory. I'm so glad I got to spend this time with my beautiful and adorable nieces. They fill my heart with so much love, and they mean the world to me. ♥

I always hear that being a parent to a kid on Halloween is a blast. Watching your child so cute in their costume, so excited as they run from house to house, their wonder...I have to admit, it was pretty awesome. Last year, our little girl had little reaction. She was only 1 year old and had just gotten over a serious illness. This year, though, she had this candy thing down pat. My hometown has trick or treating at businesses on the main strip for a couple of hours before the real trick or treating, so we got to enjoy that part with my family, and then we visited my grandparents and trick or treated at their addition. My daughter was running from house to house, even the ones without lights on. I think in her 2 years she is wise enough to know that being fast earns more candy because she ended up with a very full bucket in a very short time, although maybe she just earned more candy for being extra cute. ;) Being a mom and getting to relive all of these childhood memories through my children is seriously the best.
Halloween 2015 from Aubrey Dettmer on Vimeo. How bad is this? Nearly two months later, finally editing and blogging about Independence Day. This is better than I've done in the past, though, so I feel pretty grateful. Being part-time at my other job, which allows me to edit over my daughter's 2-3 hour naptime and also get to bed at a decent hour, as well as not taking on more clients than I can handle this year, has been a huge help with editing my family's photos. Documenting my children's lives from a mother's view of watching them grow and learn and investigate and celebrate is the sole reason I bought my first camera to begin with, and this year has been an amazing reminder of why I originally chose photography, even before I was blessed with my first beautiful child. So I don't want these photos to sit on my computer, completely untouched, when this is my primary purpose in photography.
Our friends have a really great piece of land and an incredible house for hosting. They are kind enough to host a wonderful 4th of July party, and this year they even had a bounce house. I think you'll see below just how much fun Little One had. How long ago that seems already! |
